Few people know that in recent versions of Windows (if I remember correctly, starting with Windows Vista) built-in defragmenter works autonomously on a schedule, performing the defragmentation process once a week at night. Some users install additional software to defragment the disk, having no idea that the defragment is also done automatically (if you use different algorithms defragmentation, the two programs can interfere with each other). Therefore, I recommend to look into the settings and see what you have there installed.
Automatic defragmentation in Windows 7 by default is scheduled once a week (for me this Wednesday, 1:00 am). Because if your computer is turned off at night, I recommend to change the schedule set up an automatic defrag to another time convenient for you.
When you begin setting up automatic defragmentation schedule, remember that at the time of the procedure is highly desirable that the disk does not make any unnecessary actions with files and folders (in order to avoid the appearance of new fragments). In other words, choose the time for automatic defragmentation is such that at this moment you are not working at the computer. This can be a lunch break or the time when you go to work or home from work.

Its definitely not a good idea to run two different defraggers at the same time. I personally liked the GUI of the XP defragger more than Win7 or Vista as it gave an idea of the progress. The main issue with the Win7 defragger is that although its scheduled, its not really automatic (like some of the commercial defraggers which run smoothly even while other programs run) and it doesnt defrag large fragmented files. About speed, well, all versions of the built in defragger take much longer than the alternate programs.
